God of the Unified FieldSkeptics tell me most top scientists have no God. In the case of physicists, I don’t believe it’s true. All physicists these days worship at the altar of the unified field. Unified field theory is the basis for all modern physics. It can’t be proved. It’s a hypothesis. There are currently holes in the theory, parts that can’t be accounted for, but they believe. One, the Higgs boson, is even called the God particle, for somehow, mysteriously, it confers mass on the universe. ![]() I will admit that my understanding of this is limited. I don’t really understand the sacred language, which is the purest of all languages, mathematics. If I was visiting a country where it was the main language, I could probably order a beer, maybe find the bathroom. But I don’t believe many people have really studied the base equations to such an extent that they can say they believe it without a leap of faith. Indeed, a leap of faith is required. Some of the things you are required to accept are staggering. Super string theory comes to mind. Einstein drew back from unified field theory, unable to summon real belief, but the current acolytes have moved beyond that into unknown territory. ![]() It posits the Big Bang, the creation myth of the Unifielders. It is at the base of all things today. It speaks of an end time of nothingness and darkness that stretches on throughout eternity, where things nevertheless exist. I preferred the time that they believed in a cycle of bangs, but modern theory, changing to fit an expanding world view has decided the universe will end in darkness. I accepted, grudgingly the concept of dark matter. This is matter they cannot define, that they use to explain the movement of galaxies. They believe in because the unified field now requires it. But it wasn't enough. Now they search for dark energy. My skeptic friend thinks that auras and therapeutic massage, spirits and ESP are nonsense, because science can't detect that energy. I'm sure he believes in dark energy though. That's science. So there are believers, a creation myth, and mysterious concepts for which belief is required. It underlies all things, was responsible for the universe's creation, always existed, and will always exist. If I were to say I don't believe it or tried to seriously debate it, the true believers would snicker, or become offended. But it's not God? Some people might think my concept of God is too elastic, but it stretches to fit the unified field. Unity is at the base of it. The field is everywhere. And my God, the power. Even skeptics believe. I think that Scientologists will tell you that what they believe is not a religion. Actually I have heard Baptists say that too. Religions are false, what they believe is simply the truth. ![]() There are small gatherings, and great convocations. In the virtual realm the size, if not the organization, is staggering. There are insiders and other less regarded believers. They are smug. Believers have taken proven fact and erected fairy tale castles of fantastic speculation. We have all taken the leap of faith. I say we because I am a Unifielder. I believe in the Unified Field Theory. Knowing as little physics as I do, my leap of faith was pretty staggering. I just don’t see how it can’t be considered a religion. Randeeman![]() |
